Dine at Manastirska Magernitsa for the Perfect Bulgarian Experience

The foods of Bulgaria are often diverse in flavours and base ingredients, using as many herbs and spices from home as possible, but still allowing for the use of imported flavours. As with all cultures, the authentic cuisine of Bulgaria consists of recipes that have been handed down through the generations. These recipes are employed in many restaurants around Bulgaria, such as the Manastirska Magernitsa in Sofia.

Founded in 2002, the Manastirska Magernitsa offers the atmosphere needed to enjoy an authentic Bulgarian dining experience. It’s quaint dining halls with their 19th century rustic tavern-style decor and cozy settings set the perfect ambience for immersing yourself in the Bulgarian culture. Throw in live performances of traditional Bulgarian folk music and there’s simply no competition. During the summer months, the garden terrace is open as well.

The menu offers a wide variety of options (and when we side “wide”, we’re talking about a menu that’s about 40 pages long) from starter to dessert using recipes not only passed down, but also recipes from the nearby monasteries. Since many of the menu items are listed using an older Bulgarian dialect, it many be challenging for even one fluent in the language to understand it, but the wait staff is highly knowledgeable about the menu and are always ready and willing to answer your questions.

The Manastirska Magernitsa may be a little on the pricey side, but the quality of service and food is well worth the cost. Lunch or dinner at the Manastirska Magernitsa should be on your to-do list next time you’re in Sofia.
